On summit day the path is mostly scree and loose rock and dust and patches of ice and snow. Summit night is a long night, leaving at midnight to climb nearly 1300 metres to the top for dawn, and then all the way back down to the forest line in one day. There is an option for a spectacular sunrise balloon ride. We enjoy a game drive in route to Seronera, where we fly back to the local airport in Arusha for a farewell lunch at the Arusha Hotel and then prepare for late-night international departures. Today we climb to 15,100 ft. at Lava Tower while crossing a ridge and viewing the plains far below. Here we eat lunch and admire the ancient glacier ice of the Breach Wall before dropping to our 12,900-ft. Moir Camp is tucked away at the end of a large gorge, below a giant lava flow. We travel through the upper range of the moorlands zone, crossing the large Shira Plateau, and ascend gradually on easy terrain.
The distance of the Machame route is approximately 62 km or 37 miles. The total elevation gain ranges from approximately 16,000 to 17,000 feet. Its the only one with huts, rather than tents, but it's often underestimated. You will generally be at the summit for no more than minutes enough time to take in the views, snap some photos, have a snack and a drink and catch a breather. In most cases, summit day actually begins in the middle of the night so that youll hopefully reach the top in time for sunrise.
There are two distinguishing features of mountain climbing. Firstly, it means using special equipment , which is not usually used for hiking or trekking expeditions. Some are longer for individuals who require the extra time to acclimatize as they gain elevation, while others are shorter for the elite hiker who can rush to the top and back. You will start early in the morning and ascent steeply through lush mountain forest full of birds to reach the halfway point of Elephant Ridge. After 3 to 5 hours climbing you will reach Saddle Hut where you will have lunch. Standing 4565 meters in height, Mt. Meru is a more approachable climb than Kilimanjaro and serves as a great stand alone hike in its own right. Many trekkers choose to use Mount Meru as an acclimation hike prior to starting their trek up Africa’s highest peak.
