Taitung Taiwan: A Costal County with a Multi-ethnic Culture

The park protects the largest and best-preserved prehistoric settlement in  Taiwan. The Beinan (卑南) culture inhabited the area from 2500 to 300 BC in and were known for their jade production. There are usually eight DailyAir flights per day from Taitung Airport , and each plane only has 19 seats. The flights go on sale exactly two months before the date of departure and sell out very quickly. If you can get a seat, it’s really worth it, and it’s an exhilarating ride! There’s also a local 台東 伴手禮 fruit called 林投 that we saw everywhere there. It looks like an orange pineapple, and the juice we tasted from it was pretty good. The dates of these rituals change every year and are different in every village, so you can’t expect to be able to show up on Orchid Island and catch one of these events.

SourceOld buildings from the railway company were turned into an art space where artists can exhibit their art and get a space to work. The exhibitions change regularly and a walking track has been built outside. During summer, the place hosts a craft market and regular events, especially concerts. Star Tribe Tea House (星星部落景觀咖啡) This is another small café up in the hills, across the Beinan River and north of Taitung city, in Beinan township. The outdoor patio features impressive views looking down on Taitung, especially at night. If you continue following winding Dongli Road past it, the views become even more dramatic.
The owner of our guesthouse even gave us a free tour to his parents’ underground house. Ferries arrive at Kaiyuan Harbor, which is where what used to be the island’s only 7-Eleven is also located. Kaiyuan Harbour is just north of Yeyou village, where the coast is dominated by Mantou Rock . The first is Fugang Harbor (富岡漁港), where ferries also go to Green Island. It’s a 15-minute drive from the Taitung train station or 25 minutes from the Taitung Airport.

The park is pleasant, with a lot of shadowy parts so, even during summer, it’s a nice place to  go for a walk. Luye Township is a cute little town, the road to get there is just beautiful. There are several activities to do there such as trekking and biking, and you can also do paragliding or arrange for a hot air balloon ride . The views are phenomenal and offer stunning scenery, this part of Taiwan definitively is the most beautiful one. Going on a hot air balloon ride over the area is one of the best things to in Taitung.

You’ll be surprised by the variety of things to do in Taitung, both within the city center and those accessible on a day trip. We also noticed a distinct lack of young Tao adults on the island. There were few teens to be seen hanging out or ripping around on scooters like you see in most aboriginal communities in Taiwan. The most common places we saw locals were farming the fields and drinking or chatting in groups on the elevated platforms found around the island, usually beside homes or facing the sea.

There’s a small museum inside, it’s a branch of the larger National Museum of Prehistory. You can also see some of the excavation sites, in some of which you’ll see traces of ancient structures. You’ll also find two reproductions of historical houses belonging to the Neolithic Beinan people and some information about their daily life. A few more famous Taitung attractions lie to the south of Taitung City. The train line follows the coast here, before crossing over to the west coast of Taiwan. More remote Orchid Island (蘭嶼 or Lanyu) is home to Taiwan’s most remote aboriginal tribe, the Tao people.
Don’t miss the collection of businesses in shipping containers covered by an undulating roof at the back near Xinsheng Road. I recommend visiting Railway Art Village in the evening, not only for the music but also because that’s when the various other cafés, restaurants, and shops on site come alive. There are often various lights and lanterns lit up after dark, giving the whole village a romantic yet artsy vibe. You can walk right along the train tracks here, where a few train cars are parked. There’s also some original wooden Train Warehouses (台東舊站機關車庫 and 台東鐵道藝術村261倉庫) and Old Taitung Train Station Platform (台東舊站轉車台). If have more time in Taitung city, the city’s hippest attraction is Railway Art Village (鐵道藝術村, often abbreviated to 鐵化村 or Tiehua Village / tiehua cun).
This teahouse has become a popular tourist attraction in Taichung, which at times requires you to wait at least 30 minutes to get your drink. To have a taste of famous thing in Taiwan that started it all, try their original pearl milk tea. This tour will first take you to visit a Dongxing Tribe then the adventure will begin, River tracing includes swimming, hiking, and climbing along, and in, the river. It’s a great activity for outdoor lovers who want to try something new and explore some of Taitung’s natural wonders. Mulberry Creek is a beautiful sight, full of caves, cliffs, rock formations, and lush vegetation.
